Grunt...Animatronic Sculpt by commanderholly Grunt...Animatronic Sculpt by commanderholly
Alright, Grunt is finally done! I'm posting pics of his finished face here, but first a FEW THINGS ABOUT ANIMATRONICS!

Grunt's face is going to be animated with a mechanism underneath the foam latex skin to create life-like movement! He's going to have an eye blink, a lip movement, a pupeteered mouth, and an eyebrow movement. All of these use little motor things called servos, that are programmed and hooked up to a battery.

THIS is why Grunt looks SLEEPY! No, I'm not making cute!grunt with squishy eyes, even though that would be awesome. When you sculpt an animatronic head, it needs to be in the neutral position. This means everything has to be as if you've decided to be super lazy and let your mouth sort of slack and your eyes droop. When he's cast up in foam latex, it'll be really easy to just lift his skin eyelid up and make him look awake again and not drunk. Also, those pink pieces are sculpy plates that I made. Those center plates will be made out of plastic so that Tank can see out of the mask. Hooray!

O_O

do you have any idea just how much awesome you've packed into that one pic? man, when it's done, and you get the costume set up, you NEED to link a pic, or even a vid for it. with that much detail it'll easily be the best Cosplay in the HISTORY of cosplays...

all you need once it's all done is to install a voice distorter to make your voice sound like Grunt's....then you're done =P

man, this alone has inspired me to Devwatch you. i look forward to seeing how this turns out

That's really awesome, do you mind if I asked how you plan to make the armour? I've been doing some research into making cosplay armour for a while, and I'm debating whether or not I ought to cast the armour over vacuum-forming it...

There's lots of ways to do it, and a lot of them will get you the look you want. Vaccu-forming is alright, but you can't change the design after it's done, really. The best best way to do it is the hardest and least fun, and that's sculpting it, molding it in silicone, and making it out of fiberglass. That's just because you can change it with bondo, step things into it, etc. I'm doing a mix of that and plastic forming with kydex, wonderflex, etc etc because I'm running out of time. :D hahaha But anyway, hope that helps!!!

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the feedback. I'm glad to know about how you're doing it, because I think I was leaning toward sculpting and casting it anyways. And I will be looking up kydex and wonderflex now--again, thank you! ^_^
